  • Asturias Spain
     September 22, 2021
     1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Spain is a country that is best described as a union of autonomous communities, each with their own history, culture, and cuisine and some even with their own language. Asturias, a northern, coastal region in Spain is often described as “Un paraíso natural entre montaña y mar” (A natural paradise between mountain and sea) because of the different landscapes one can find within its borders. Local Asturians take a lot of pride in their community and will often tell people that Asturias is the “true” Spain. The local language, distinct from Castilian Spanish, has been preserved here and it can be heard trickling out of houses and restaurants. It is just one example of how Asturians have maintained their unique customs and traditions throughout the centuries, tying the area to the past while still having every comfort of the modern world. In this class Lilli Reilly, a Pennsylvania native who has spent the last 2 years working in Spain, and her partner Rodrigo Lopez Gutierrez, a proud Asturian will discuss the history of the region, the traditions of the inhabitants, local foods like cachopo and cider, and the region’s unique language and accent. This class has something for everyone: adventurers, history buffs, nature-lovers, and foodies alike and the presenters are delighted to share this hidden gem of Spain with all of you. Virtual class on Zoom.
