Tallahassee Old City Cemetery Tour
September 20, 2024
8:30 am - 11:00 am
Old City Cemetery is the oldest public cemetery in Tallahassee. It was established in 1929 by the Territorial Legislative Council and acquired by the city in 1840. When established, the cemetery was segregated. The cemetery is one of Tallahassee’s most distinctive historic sites. It represents a cross section of Tallahassee’s people during the 19th century including enslaved people and planters, governors and store clerks, veterans of wars, and victims of yellow fever. Barbara Clark, RPA, MSA, of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, will lead a tour of the cemetery discussing its history, people, and the grave markers that are artistic expressions that reflect changing cultural attitudes toward death. Expect some uneven terrain. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Bring drinking water. Meet in TSC dining room 8:30 am for transportation.
