The Ancient Olympics
September 23, 2024
10:00 am - 11:30 am
The Olympic Games of ancient Greece were held every four years in the village of Olympia. For a five-day period, the city-states of Greece suspended hostilities, supported the event, and allowed safe passage for athletes to travel through their territory. The winners received the coveted olive branch to wear on their heads. Many of the victorious athletes became celebrities in the Greek world. Most of the events of the ancient Olympics can be found in the modern Olympics albeit with different criteria and rules. Ancient Greek enthusiast, Joe Haberfeld, will discuss the ancient Greek roots of our modern Olympic games.
