Neil Charness has spent a lifetime asking questions – and he’s not finished yet. At his core, he is a problem solver, someone who genuinely delights in a good puzzle. Whether through years of playing chess and bridge or through decades of academic research, Neil has always been fascinated by how the mind works and why it continues to grow and adapt over time.

A deep respect for education and perseverance was instilled early in Neil’s life. He often points to his parents as his greatest influence. His mother, who pursued university studies when few women did, and his father, a World War II veteran who built his own business through hard work, modeled the value of dedication and effort. Their example shaped Neil’s lifelong belief that meaningful growth comes from persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to invest in the process.

Over the course of a distinguished academic career, Neil focused his research on aging, cognition, and how people learn and adapt across the lifespan. As a founding leader and Director of Florida State University’s Institute for Successful Longevity (ISL), he helped bring research out of theory and into real life, where it could truly make a difference.

Neil’s curiosity doesn’t stop at research. An avid amateur photographer, he has a keen eye for capturing moments of energy and connection. While photographing the Senior Games in 2025, he found himself inspired by what he saw through the lens. Admittedly not athletic, Neil set out to run a 5K – and at age 77, won a Gold Medal in the 2026 Senior Games. With patience and persistence, he trained, adapted, and ultimately exceeded his goal, proving that growth and achievement don’t have an expiration date.

That impact is felt every day at the Tallahassee Senior Center, where Neil volunteers in tech support. He offers more than solutions to seniors who may feel overwhelmed by fast-changing technology – he offers understanding. Neil believes that confidence is key: when people leave feeling capable, they are more likely to keep learning. In these moments, his research becomes personal, practical, and empowering.

At the heart of Neil’s life is his family. He and his wife, Beth, have been married for 54 years, a partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and deep commitment. Together they raised two children, Michelle and Alan, and now celebrate the accomplishments of their grandchildren, in whom Neil takes great pride.

Neil Charness reminds us that growth is not defined by age, but by how we continue to show up for others. A lifelong puzzle-solver, he finds joy in discovering solutions to both complex ideas and everyday challenges. Through that spirit of curiosity, he generously shares his knowledge in service to his community, helping others find their own way forward. In doing so, he offers a lasting example of a life lived with purpose, generosity, and care.
